What to do, if you drop cell phone or iPod in water?

Yesterday my one year old son dropped my phone in bath tub and by the time I realized, my phone had already taken one deep bath.
Accidents like this are not out of world events and we have to live with that truth… but now, what to do?
If you follow simple steps, you can manage to save your phone and make your cell phone operable (The methods listed below holds good even for your iPod and MP3 player).

  1. Do not panicDon’t lose your cool and understand that, key to save your phone and music device is "act cautiously and patiently".
  2. Take your phone out of waterEvery passing second is taking your phone towards greater danger, as water takes no time to enter your mobile phones.
  3. Remove the phone battery of your cell phone immediately; this will reduce the risk of any short circuit. If your gadget is connected to a cell phone charger and your toddler has spilled water on it, disconnect the power source and remove the phone battery.
  4. Remove SIM and wipe it off with a clean cloth or a tissue paper, this will help in saving important data stored on your SIM which includes your contact list.
  5. Dismantle your phone to an extent it is possible, keeping in mind that you need to assemble it after some time… don’t over-do anything. This helps water removal from all possible places.
  6. Remove water - Shake your phone gently and clean it with a clean cloth or a tissue paper. For small openings use ear bud or dry tissue paper rolled on a tooth pick.
  7. Use vacuum cleaner over your cell phone for a small duration but try to maintain a good distance between your phone and Vacuum cleaner. Do not use hair dryer for the purpose.
  8. Use uncooked dry ricePlace your cell phone in a container of uncooked dry rice overnight, rice has an excellent moisture absorbing capacity and would absorb any remaining moisture. Read an article by Ernesto LondoƱo who saves his Blackberry phone by using a cheap home remedy.
  9. Place your cell phone above TV (not LCD TV), stabilizers, near microwave vents where low heat is radiated; this will help in drying up your phone. You can safely place your phone in front of air conditioner as it emits dry air which helps in evaporation of water from your cell phone. With caution you can also keep your phone near window where sunlight is present for small duration but avoid any direct sunlight over phone.
  10. If your cell phone is dropped in a salty water - First remove all water as drying up your phone may lead into crystal formation, use spirit or alcohol on cotton cloth. Avoid application of alcohol to electronic circuits. Don't plug your phone to power source until smell of alcohol is completely gone.

Try to use cotton cloth wherever its mentioned cloth, male vest can be used for the purpose. Tissue paper and news paper can also be used for that purpose.

Once you are sure that water and moisture is completely dried up, assemble your phone; re-attach the phone battery and check. If it fails to operate contact the authorized service center.

Piece of advice, to save warranty on your phone

Warranty on your cell phone does not covers damage due to water, for that purpose there is a white sticker under your phone battery with dots on it, in case your phone gets wet, these dots permanently changes color (from white to pink or red) and eventually voids your warranty claims. Follow simple steps to avoid such a situation
  1. As soon as you purchase a new cell phone, place a piece of scotch tape on water damage sticker. Remove this tape before visiting the authorized dealer and claim for the warranty.
  2. In case your sticker dot have turned red, place a drop of bleach on the red spot , this will red spot to white, as earlier.
